Donderdag 10 juni jl. maakte het Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) bekend dat het de schorsing van keeper André Onana (AFC Ajax) terug heeft gebracht tot negen maanden. Daardoor is hij op 4 november 2021 weer speelgerechtigd.
Onana had bij het CAS beroep ingesteld tegen een eerdere uitspraak van de UEFA Appeals Body. Daarin werd de doelman voor twaalf maanden geschorst voor een vastgestelde anti-doping overtreding zonder “significant fault”, nadat hij tijdens een ‘out of competition’ controle op 30 oktober 2020 positief was getest op het middel Furosemide (dat door het WADA is opgenomen op de lijst van verboden middelen).
Het begeleidende persbericht vermeldt: ‘In coming to its decision, the CAS Panel also found that no “significant fault” could be attributed to André Onana who had ingested medication destined for another person in error. On that basis, the Panel considered that a 9-month ban was proportionate to the negligence committed and reduced the suspension by 3 months, but could not accept the goalkeeper’s request for the removal of the suspension entirely. The CAS Panel has issued its decision, without the grounds, which will be notified to the parties in the coming weeks.’
